Workshop Learning Objective

In our KS2 Settlements workshop, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of human settlements and their development over time. They will identify and differentiate between various types of settlements, including hamlets, villages, towns, and cities, exploring the unique features and functions of each.

Students will delve into the factors that influence where and how settlements grow, such as natural resources, geography, and community needs. They will also investigate how settlements evolve to support growing populations and changing demands. Through interactive and creative LEGO building activities, students will explore the dynamics of community life, gaining insight into the structure and function of places where people live and work.

Workshop Learning Outcome

By the end of this KS2 workshop, students will be able to define and describe various types of human settlements and their significance within a community. They will identify different settlement types—hamlets, villages, towns, and cities—and explain the factors that influence the growth and function of each.

Additionally, students will demonstrate their understanding of settlement structures by building a detailed LEGO model of a chosen settlement type, incorporating essential features that support community life, such as transport, resources, and communal spaces.

What To Expect From Our KS2 Settlements Workshop

  • An overview of human settlements in the UK: We discuss the features that make up various settlements such as a Hamlet, Village, Town and City. We identify what type of settlement we live in and the features within it.

  • Exploring the settlement we live in: An interactive visual presentation exploring the settlement the students school is based in. We look at a satellite view map of the settlement and discuss the features within it that class it as that type of settlement.

  • LEGO Building Challenge: Children will be challenged to build a new town out of LEGO that can accommodate its new residents. We discuss what should be included and as a class we build individual creations to add to the Town.

  • Evaluation: At the end of the building challenge we invite children to place their building or creation into the new LEGO Town. We discuss where creations should be positioned. We consider the planning of the town as we bring our builds together.

KS2 Setttlements Workshop Duration

Our KS2 Hamlets, Villages, Towns and Cities LEGO Building Workshop is a 75 minute session packed with immersive, hands-on learning. We start with an engaging visual presentation that introduces the Geography topic and allows children to share their existing knowledge on the settlements topic.
This sets the stage for an exciting LEGO building challenge where children will individually build a creation for the new town. As a class we piece the town together with all the children’s creations.
We conclude the workshop by summarising the key lessons learned, and encouraging teachers to capture photos of the LEGO masterpieces. This workshop not only educates but also inspires creativity and critical thinking through playful construction. There is 5 – 10 minutes at the end to allow for the reset of the LEGO and photos.
