KS2 Animal Kingdom School Workshop

Explore the fascinating world of animal classification and the food chain with our engaging KS2 Animal Kingdom – 75 minute LEGO building workshop. This hands-on school workshop encourages children to deepen their understanding of animal groups and classifications—such as vertebrate, invertebrate, carnivore, and herbivore—while exploring each animal’s place within the food chain and how it interacts with its environment. Through creative LEGO building activities, students will classify animals, build environments that reflect each animal’s adaptations to its habitat, and consider how these characteristics support their role within the ecosystem.

Topic: Animal Kingdom – Animal Classification

Main Activity: Building a LEGO Animal identify its various classifications and build an appropriate habitat

Duration: 75 Minutes

This workshop is part of our KS2 School Workshops series, focusing on the animal kingdom. In addition to this Workshop, we offer a variety of other engaging workshops, such as Animal Habitats, Ocean Life and Rainforest Life. These workshops are designed to educate and inspire young learners about the natural world and the importance of protecting it.

Workshop Learning Objective

In our KS2 Animal Kingdom Classification workshop, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of animal classification and its role in the natural world. They will explore various animal groups, such as mammals, reptiles, birds, and amphibians, and delve into classification categories like diet (carnivore, herbivore, omnivore) and physical traits (vertebrate, invertebrate).

Students will build LEGO models of animals, identifying their classifications and explaining how these traits help them thrive. Additionally, they will design habitats that reflect each animal’s specific needs, investigating how features like diet, physical structure, and behavioural adaptations play a part in survival. Through interactive LEGO building activities, students will gain insight into the diversity of life and each animal’s place within the ecosystem.

Workshop Learning Outcome

By the end of this KS2 school workshop, students will be able to define and describe various animal classifications, such as vertebrates and invertebrates, as well as diet-based classifications like carnivores, herbivores, and omnivores. They will identify specific animals, classify them within these groups, and explain how these classifications relate to survival needs and habitats.

Additionally, students will demonstrate their understanding by building a detailed LEGO model of an animal, explaining its classification, and creating a habitat that reflects essential survival features relevant to its dietary and physical adaptations. This hands-on activity reinforces their knowledge of animal classification and highlights each animal’s role within the ecosystem.

What To Expect From Our KS2 Animal Kingdom Workshop

  • Introduction to Animal Kingdom and classification: A discussion on animal groups and the various classifications such as diet (e.g., carnivores, herbivores) and physical characteristics (e.g., vertebrates, invertebrates) and how these factors influence an animal’s habitat and survival strategies.

  •  Exploring Animal Classifications and Adaptations: An interactive visual presentation that dives into various animal classifications—such as vertebrates vs. invertebrates and dietary categories like carnivores and herbivores—paired with examples of animals within each group. This session will illustrate how an animal’s classification links to its survival strategies and habitat needs.

  • LEGO Building Challenge Part 1: Children choose an animal to build with LEGO bricks, identify its various classifications.

  • LEGO Building Challenge Part 2: Children build a LEGO habitat for their chosen animal, incorporating features that support the animal’s survival and considering the environmental factors of the habitat.

KS2 Animal Kingdom Workshop Duration

Our KS2 Animal Kingdom LEGO Building Workshop is a 75 minute session packed with immersive, hands-on learning. We begin with an engaging visual presentation that introduces the concept of animal classifications and groups, such as mammals, reptiles, carnivores, and herbivores. Students will explore key facts about each group and discover how behavioural and physical adaptations support their survival.

This sets the stage for an exciting LEGO building challenge, where children first construct an animal of their choice, identify its classification, and then create a corresponding habitat that reflects essential survival features related to its diet and physical traits.

We conclude the workshop by summarising the key lessons learned, inviting teachers to capture photos of the LEGO creations. This workshop not only educates but also inspires creativity, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of the diversity within the animal kingdom through playful construction.
